Fear of public speaking

Fear of public speaking

Fear of public speaking, Glossophobia, is right up there with fear of dying. How irrational is that!

It’s said about 75% of people are affected by it. It’s essentially a fear of being judged.

When we have irrational fears it can stop us from embracing change or it can hold us back in life.

Fear is our protective mind keeping us safe. It is sending out warning signals that we are in danger, and logically we know this isn’t true.

When someone suffers from fear of public speaking for instance it can feel overwhelming to have to speak up at a meeting in work. Or to make a speech at a wedding or for some it can be just having a conversation with another person or people.

It can stem from past negative experiences or be instilled from childhood. Some symptoms can be uncomfortable tummy sensations, sweating, dry mouth, wobbly legs, or it can be a struggle to get words out. It can be a combination of these sensations in the body, that they dread the thoughts of being in a position where they have to speak and will avoid it at all costs.

Many people who seek help with us for public speaking say the fear is hindering them in their career. Other people will say it is holding them back in social situations as they feel awkward or anxious to talk to others. It can prevent a person from forming relationships as they can’t relax and be themselves with others.

Most people will notice a great improvement after just one session. They will feel more relaxed and find it easier to communicate. In the session, we guide the client to let go of any negative experiences or events which has any relevance to having the issue. I like to describe it as a re-education for the mind.
They can then go on to feel calmer and enjoy a new way of reacting and responding.
