Not everyone knows how Hypnosis can help !

A lot of people think hypnosis is just used to entertain people. To have people on a TV or stage show and follow instructions from the Hypnotist. To do all kinds of things from clucking like a chicken to barking like a dog and many other entertaining things.
After all, it’s a show and in that situation, the hypnotist’s job is to entertain. The chosen subjects follow suggestions and they too perform under hypnosis.

Yes 👍 that is one aspect of it. But there is a much more useful side to this state. It’s clinical hypnosis.

People seek help for many issues, some of the better-known issues would be to Quit Smoking, Lose weight, and there is a whole range of other issues dealt with using hypnosis.

These include public speaking, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, addictions, sports/exercise motivation, fears, phobias, behavioural issues, and the list goes on.

When someone seeks help for an issue in the clinic, they can naturally feel unsure or sometimes feel a bit nervous as they are not sure what to expect.

Maybe they are reminded of a hypnosis show they’ve seen or been advised by someone who doesn’t understand the process that they are “under a spell” or being controlled by the Hypnotherapist.

Explaining the process is important.
Outlining how they can expect to feel and everything the hypnotherapist will say is for their benefit. They can then enjoy the process and benefit from a positive outcome.

Performing some simple tasks to show them how powerful their mind is and how it can be directed to help them instead of hinder them is another important step.

This is the basis for success for a client and they can then go into the session open for the change they desire.

They can relax and feel more comfortable following the simple steps throughout the session.

They are carefully guided through the process in their mind which allows them to create the change they have presented and emerge feeling relaxed and calm.

In fact so many clients will say they never remember feeling so relaxed. It’s a win-win situation and in many cases life-changing.

Fear of public speaking, Glossophobia, is right up there with fear of dying. How irrational is that!

It’s said about 75% of people are affected by it. It’s essentially a fear of being judged.

When we have irrational fears it can stop us from embracing change or it can hold us back in life.

Fear is our protective mind keeping us safe. It is sending out warning signals that we are in danger, and logically we know this isn’t true.

When someone suffers from fear of public speaking for instance it can feel overwhelming to have to speak up at a meeting in work. Or to make a speech at a wedding or for some it can be just having a conversation with another person or people.

It can stem from past negative experiences or be instilled from childhood. Some symptoms can be uncomfortable tummy sensations, sweating, dry mouth, wobbly legs, or it can be a struggle to get words out. It can be a combination of these sensations in the body, that they dread the thoughts of being in a position where they have to speak and will avoid it at all costs.

Many people who seek help with us for public speaking say the fear is hindering them in their career. Other people will say it is holding them back in social situations as they feel awkward or anxious to talk to others. It can prevent a person from forming relationships as they can’t relax and be themselves with others.

Most people will notice a great improvement after just one session. They will feel more relaxed and find it easier to communicate. In the session, we guide the client to let go of any negative experiences or events which has any relevance to having the issue. I like to describe it as a re-education for the mind.
They can then go on to feel calmer and enjoy a new way of reacting and responding.

A lovely friend of mine used to say that when life got a bit hectic.

I heard it again recently. A client rang to ask could I help with her feeling stressed. She said she feels like she’s on a roller coaster, handling work, children, and home life, and feels like something is going to give !!!

She came in for her session and said her head was busting and wasn’t sure if she could even relax enough to work with me.

She said she wanted to feel calmer so that she could deal with the day-to-day busyness of being a parent to her 2 young children, and running a home while working full time.

After a couple of sessions, she said she felt calmer, more in control of things and enjoying her life more.

Is all of the uncertainty affecting you?
News reports, updates on COVID 19 figures, what phase are we in or coming next?
Media reports can fuel fear in people, especially those who are already feeling vulnerable. A person can be going through struggles in their life, either with physical or mental health issues, financial, relationship, all kinds of burdens and when they tune into TV or radio stations, pick up a newspaper the content can compound the fearful feeling that is already present. It can feel like a carousel of negativity. In fact, even for someone in a strong mental state, it has the power to overwhelm.
So how can we help ourselves, whilst keeping abreast of the situation without feeling overwhelmed?
Firstly being mindful of the amount of time spent absorbing the information.
Decide on the time that you feel is best for you to check in on updates. This can be once a day at a particular time. Receive the updates and then move on to doing something else.
Be logical about facts and figures, keeping in mind that the media must report the negative news in order to grasp our attention
Always be aware of how you can follow the recommendations given, utilising all the advice given re handwashing, mask-wearing and coughing etiquette.
Take time to enjoy being out in fresh air and doing some mindful deep breathing and enjoy the process as you do it.
It can be out on a walk or simply going into your garden, balcony, at an open window, or any open space. Do this on a daily basis, develop it into a habit so it becomes normal and natural, something to look forward to and benefit you.
Eat healthily, enjoy the best possible nutritious food and increase your water intake.
Fuelling and hydrating your body so it will reward you by working efficiently.
Make a plan to connect with someone positive who can uplift you. This can be a friend, a neighbour, family member or chatting to a cheerful person at the supermarket can lift your mood.
Be the person to call someone else, maybe that person also needs contact and your action can help them too.
If you notice a low mood there are many uplifting podcasts or movies you can enjoy. By being aware of any low mood signals, you can halt them before they take hold.
This virus has arrived at most of us out of the blue. Our medical professionals assure us that at some stage we will be free to get on with our lives without the burden of it overshadowing our ability to enjoy life.
Be patient with yourself, acknowledge any goals you have already achieved, make a decision to take good care of yourself by being mindful of your wonderful potential and look forward to celebrating your life as it was intended, enjoy the gift of life.
First thing in the morning makes a decision to practice gratitude for your life and how you can engage positively in your life. You will notice how making simple mindset changes can have such a wonderful difference.
And of course, if you need help reach out for it, hypnosis is a wonderful tool to assist in creating a brighter and more positive feeling
Hypnosis can be done online just as successfully as in person. In fact, some of our clients favour it, as it doesn’t involve any travel or time restrictions.

Sarah, aged 23 had not been to the dentist for 4 years. She really wanted to go as had an issue with a tooth at the front of her mouth and was so self-conscious that she was putting her hand to her mouth when speaking or smiling. This was affecting her self-confidence. The thought of going to the dentist had her shaking, tense, anxious, her hands sweating. The last time she was there she thought she felt pain even though she had an anaesthetic and panicked when the dentist just wanted to look in her mouth. She had also made appointments that she had to cancel because of her terror.
In our consultation, before the session, we discussed the physical feelings of this fear, where she thought it came from when was it at its worst and were any other times/situations in her life when she felt this way. I explained how the sub-conscious mind worked and put her at ease before the session.
In the sessions, we dealt with the event where the fear originated and the other instances in her life which reinforced that fear which allowed her to feel calm and relaxed. After the sessions, the idea of going to the dentist held no fear for her and she was looking forward to getting her teeth sorted.
Sarah contacted me a few weeks later, having been to the dentist, to let me know that she is now smiling confidently and that she also feels more positive in all areas of her life.

The three words that can strike fear, horror even terror into some people.

This eight-legged creature with a body no bigger than a couple of grains of rice can cause absolutely no harm, but to some when spotted it is like they are immediately transported into a 70’s horror movie.

This has to beg a question why?

Why would somebody logically, rationally know that in Ireland at least, a spider can cause no harm but upon seeing one go straight into panic mode fearing for their very existence?

The answer though is in fact quite straight forward.

The part of our mind that protects us from perceived threat is neither logical nor rational. It is our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is our protector and if programmed to perceive threat it will do its job and manifest to protect us from what it perceives to be this threat.

Now, the word perceived is very important as the subconscious does not differentiate between threat imagined or real and the subconscious is very resistant to change. Once programmed the perception tends to stick.

But where, when, why, how?

None of us is born with a fear of spiders, so obviously, sometime in our life’s experiences, we must have had a negative interaction with one. In the vast majority of cases, this interaction takes place in our younger years, prior development of our conscious judgement.

This interaction may have been with somebody else or by ourselves as we also in our younger years learn from the reaction of others also.

If eg. as a child I am in the bathroom and Mum grabs me and runs out the door screaming there is a spider, my protective mechanism will kick in to teach me threat from a spider. Whether it be a spider or a tiger does not matter, if mum perceives a threat from it there must be a threat. If I am playing in a hayshed with siblings and friends and come out and we are all covered and can’t get them off, if some others are panicking then I may also feel out of control and panic also. Once the perceived threat has been programmed, the subconscious is resistant to change, not logical or rational and as such the programming sticks.

However, the good news is that it is possible to reprogramme the subconscious. By establishing the events that are causing the fear we can reprogramme with logical experience negating the perceived threat.

In a nutshell, by reprogramming the subconscious mind’s perception of situations or types of the situation causing the fear, the subconscious no longer perceives a threat, no longer manifests to protect and as such we don’t react the same way.

If you are a fast eater then you are an overeater. We have all seen someone we know if not ourselves hoover up their dinner from the plate. This is not only a very bad habit but can explain why some people whose diet is relatively good and healthy, they do not eat a lot of rubbish, and they too can have excess weight issues. How is this possible you may be asking yourself?

It’s a very simple understanding but you can’t understand what you don’t know until you know it. The main reason for this is the speed of their eating. We see it everywhere we go, all you have to do the next time you are out for lunch or dinner is to observe the other people eating and the speed of their eating. If you are a fast eater then you have a much higher chance of entering the world of obesity and the many health problems and concerns that can bring to your doorstep. And you may say “Oh I have always been a fast eater it’s the way I’m made and unfortunately that is not true. You may say oh I don’t have the time to sit and relax at dinner time because I have so much to do. Or I don’t get the time to sit at meal times because I have to feed the kids. You may create any reason or excuse but to be honest none of it is true.

When you are a fast eater you are an overeater and the reason for this is clear. Most fast eaters will have their dinner plate cleaned in 5 to 8 minutes, and may experience some bloating after their meal. The reason for the feeling bloated is because you stuffed food into yourself much too fast and not only too fast but you have over-filled your stomach. These are concerns you should be aware of and wary of. Most people will report that they feel a bit lethargic after their dinner and yes, they do. The reason for feeling a lack of energy, bloated, stuffed, tired etc. is that because you stuffed too much food into your stomach and did not digest the food properly in your mouth by using your teeth. You may have chewed a few times but the vast majority of the meal was not chewed and has entered your stomach undigested. The food that sits in the stomach has to be digested so it can be processed and the only option for the stomach to have this undigested food broken down is by redirecting all the energy in your body to your stomach to break the undigested food down.

This feeling of feeling lethargic can last up to an hour or more depending on the person. This overtime can open up a list of different health issues and concerns going forward. This also causes continual weight gain and the lack of ability to lose weight. Some of the worrying health implications can be a scary prospect for the future. If you are a fast eater and rushing your meals and not chewing your food you may be at risk of Insulin Resistance. Fast eating can be linked to the possible threat of Type 2 Diabetes, high blood sugars and insulin levels. This can also be known as a hallmark for type 2 diabetes. The other issue is digestion and a healthy digestive system being damaged by large portions of food eaten too quickly. By stuffing too much food in your stomach after not chewing it sufficiently causes a lot of stress on your digestive system, it can also lead to irregular bowel movements and constipation.

Fast eaters do not get the full enjoyment or satisfaction from the meals because they eat so fast there isn’t time to allow all the flavours and textures to give their full value or taste the experience. By eating too fast and swallowing your food before its digested in your mouth bypasses your taste buds, you swallow the food before you get its true flavours and seasoning. Eating too fast also causes a big risk to your metabolic system and your ability to metabolise your food. It can also lead to a poor metabolism which makes the chance of you losing weight a much lower possibility. If you are serious about losing weight you slow down when you eat.

When you are happy, and all is well in your world everything is ok or even great. Your head is clear and generally, there is a sense of lightness and general wellbeing emanating from within you. Life is magic.

But when you are down things can look very different. Some might even say ‘What’s going on with them, did they wake up on the wrong side of the bed?’ Maybe something happened, maybe you got bad news out of the blue and maybe you’ve had a ton of stuff hit you all at once and it is hard to deal with, or it is simply your past catching up with you.

Our emotions are so powerful. They can at times make us or break us. When a client comes in and they are releasing verbally why they have come for a hypnosis session, sometimes they can be fighting to hold back the tears. Oftentimes people tell me things they have ever told anyone before. They have kept it hidden and buried deep down in their subconscious mind for years, whether that is out of fear, guilt or shame, through their own doing or not, it doesn’t matter! My job is to help that person in front of me who is opening up so they can change their life for the better. There is nothing really that I have not heard before and it is my job to be non-judgmental, and I work on this daily. Never, suppress your tears, that is the energy that needs to flow out of you to help you heal. Sometimes during a session tears can flow too, they are a release, something has been addressed, brought out into the open, released, forgiven and unblocked.

Your emotions are energy in motion, so don’t stop them and keep them trapped in the body. Our emotions are stored in our subconscious mind, but they are also then stored in our organs which can lead to a physical manifestation of ill health.

Just looking at anxiety and stress alone, working from the head down, can affect your head and brain, foggy brain anyone? Can’t think of something or that name or word is just on the tip of your tongue a lot of the time and it doesn’t come?

Your stomach can also be affected, like when a young child says ‘Mam, I have a sick/upset tummy’ they could be quite anxious about something that you are unaware of, it’s not always a tummy bug.

For long term sufferers of anxiety their whole digestive system can be so upset it can even cause IBS. You can be ‘sick to your stomach’ a lot and have a loss of appetite, losing weight because you are so stressed and anxious.

So, what can you do? Look at your life and make a list of the areas in your life that are causing you stress. What can you do to relieve or remove the stress? How does that make you feel having identified the cause of the stress and the positive change you can bring about?

For anxiety, identify what triggers you, is a person, a situation, an event? What makes it worse? Try box breathing, breathe in for the count of 4 seconds, hold that breath for 4 seconds, breathe out for the count of 4 seconds, then do nothing for the count of 4 seconds (no in or out-breath), repeat a few times, this will bring your anxiety levels straight down. Seek professional help if it is ruining your joy and overshadowing everything in your life.

When you hear the word change does it excite or terrify you?

What does change mean for you?

Do you have an area in your life that you would like to make a positive change in?

Let’s look at the word change.

Verb

make or become different.

take or use another instead of.

Noun

an act or process through which something becomes different.

Synonym

Transition – the process of changing from one situation, form or state to

another

When you contact the clinic for a positive change in your life with something you feel you can no longer live with, like anxiety, you are screened to make sure you want this change for yourself. No matter how hard someone in your life may want the change for you, the process will only work if YOU want the change.

Now imagine, as hypnosis is all about the power of your imagination, you are at a pivotal moment during the session. Imagine if you were holding back in some way, and the hypnotherapist will always know, that for whatever reason you are not letting go of the old you. The process seems unusually difficult. The hypnotherapist will emerge you and have a chat with you about what is holding you back. For the extremely rare number of people, it can be that they are afraid of the change that will follow. They have lived with their anxiety for however many years and it in a strange way has become their friend. It is familiar and makes them feel safe even though logically and rationally they ultimately know it is harming them.

On the very rare occasion this has happened I tell the client they have a choice, a choice to change. If they fear change, I ask them to close their eyes and imagine their life with their anxiety getting bigger, stronger, more out of control, affecting every single part of their lives. In effect, it is like a poison leaching in through them destroying every single part of their being. You wouldn’t feed poison to yourself knowingly! What did that feel like to them? Not good at all. I then ask them to imagine a life where they go about their daily business carefree and happy. How does that feel? A lot better, strange, nicer, different, good.

The very nature of life is change. We change from the instant we are conceived, from a cluster of cells changing into a foetus, then when we are born a baby our body and mind continues to grow to adulthood and still mentally, emotionally and physically changing all the way up until death. The environment we live in changes too, maybe the people in it, the colour of our walls, our beds, our friends, schools, homes, jobs. Nature changes daily. We can have 4 seasons in one hour or less in Ireland. The tide keeps on flowing, day turns into night, the clock keeps on ticking, time moves on, change is inevitable. Change is a guaranteed certainty in life.

Ask yourself, what is the worst thing that can happen if you change any area of your life that you are unhappy with? You might just like the newer person you become. Freeing yourself from a prison you had yourself trapped in for a crime you did not commit. But you will never know until YOU are ready to make that change for YOU. Tell me what do you choose? To stay the same or embrace the new you?

We had no choice in how were brought up, how we looked, how we dressed for the most part and more importantly how we felt! We are all a product of our own environment. Where we lived, who we lived with and what we were exposed to, have all been contributing factors to shaping us as human beings in how we feel and behave today.

People who come to our clinics have already been programmed just like you and me, to behave and feel a certain way. When we are born, our subconscious mind works straight away and if you can imagine this being the hard drive of your body and mind (just like the hard drive of your new laptop/computer), it starts to absorb programming straight away.
Whatever programming you give it becomes its absolute reality.
So when you get a new computer, you have to download programmes in order to make it work and do what you need it to do. When you are born, everything that happens after that day, is stored in your subconscious mind and becomes part of your programming. Events that happen, things that are said to you, things that are not said to you and things that you perceive are done to you. Both happy and not so happy things. How we perceive all of these things in those early years is completely out of our control.

During the first 7/8 years of life is crucial in the development of our emotional well being so ultimately it can affect our choices down the road if we aren’t confident in ourselves. The reason for this, is that the Conscious part of the mind doesn’t kick in until after the first 7/8 years of life, so this is why a child cannot rationalise certain things.

The conscious part of the mind is where our logical thinking happens, our short-term memory, the here and now, analytical thinking and very importantly our judgement is going on in here too!
When a child draws a pretty picture on the living room wall, of her and her mammy having a lovely time, that child cannot understand why mammy is throwing a wobbler when she catches her! The little girl cannot think of any logical reason for mam to be behaving so coldly towards her when the little one’s perception of the event is one where she is showing mom how much she loves her. ‘But I love you mam and I wanted to show you this…look at the lovely big heart beside your head mam’! The wee girl doesn’t realise that there is an inconvenience caused here and that the work that has to be done to ‘correct’ this is not helping mam who runs a busy house!
I sincerely hope neither of my two little ones decide some day that it would be a nice thing to do for me, but by understanding the model of the mind, and having control of my own mind, I understand that it would be them making a nice gesture! Still, let’s hope it doesn’t happen!!!

So my point here is…we have all been programmed and for most of us, part of our programming is ‘don’t colour on walls because its bold’, but perhaps being aware of things that have shaped us into who we are and how we feel, can help us choose how we want to be programmed for the rest of our lives.

Personally, finding Hypnosis to change my programming has been the greatest thing I could ever find in my life. I’m not perfect, but I love who I am because I now have control of my mind since having been ‘rebooted’ with Hypnosis. I now control what gets into my subconscious mind because the old negative programming has gone and the new positive programming has taken over! Life is for living and it goes so fast! I believe most of us could do with a ‘reboot’ to allow us to start enjoying life instead of just surviving it! We were not put on this earth to suffer! Its your life, and your right to choose how you want to spend it and who you want to spend it with!
