Why is hypnosis so effective in helping people to give up smoking?

Most smokers want to quit. So why don’t they just stop? The general answer to this is “I am addicted to nicotine”. OK, so just get a nicotine patch or gum and then you will have no need to smoke. Sounds simple, however very few people who try nicotine replacement actually stop smoking

Why is this?

Well, the answer must be that something else is keeping the person smoking. The emotions and feelings that people have towards cigarettes are far stronger than the physical addiction to nicotine! Cravings, nervousness and a feeling of things just not being right are caused by the subconscious mind. Hypnosis has direct access to the subconscious mind and can change these feelings. Once these feelings are changed, quitting smoking becomes unbelievably easy, in fact for most people it is a pleasure to quit smoking.

What about willpower or logic?

Logically we all know that we do not need to smoke to live, in fact, we know the opposite to be true. Smoking will shorten our lives. However, knowing something logically does not necessarily change how we feel. When logic is in conflict with feelings or emotions, logic will lose out in the long-term.

Most people, when they try to stop smoking use willpower. The try to suppress or push down the emotions and feelings in their subconscious mind. While they are pushing, they can stop. However as soon as they stop pushing the emotions and feelings are back as strong as ever. Willpower is not designed for long-term change. It is the wrong tool for the job.

Some of the standard reactions when a smoker tries to stop using willpower…

I will never feel normal again.

I will never be able to completely enjoy a good night out again.

I will always feel deprived.

I will feel insecure.

I will put on weight.

I won’t be able to concentrate.

It’s not surprising that most attempts to stop last only a few days or even a few hours. Even for those few who do succeed using willpower, they generally put on about 20 lbs on average. Some carry a feeling of being deprived for the rest of their lives.
